The Italian Ministry of Health has issued two amendments in 2019 that update the country’s food contact regulations – Decree of the Minister for Health of March 21, 1973 on ‘Hygiene rules for packaging, containers and utensils intended to come into contact with foodstuffs or personal use products (Ministerial Decree 3.21.1973). The two amendments relate to food contact plastic resins and stainless steels.
Decree No. 30 of February 7, 2019 – adds N, N, N', N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl) adipamide to the list of substances accepted for use in the preparation of articles intended to come into contact with food. The decree has amended Annex II Section 1: Plastics, Part A – Resins, and came into effect on April 24, 2019.
Decree No. 72 of May 9, 2019 – expands the list of authorized food contact stainless steels, from 42 to 50, and updates the list of permitted unintentionally added elements. The decree amends Section 6 to Annex II and it came into effect on August 16, 2019.
The last time the regulations on food contact stainless steels were revised was in November 2013, by Decree No. 140 of November 11, 2013.
